Lee Hammond is Redefining Restaurant Success Through Innovation and Vulnerability

In This Episode

Interview Takeaways

  • Being Vulnerable and building confidence – Sometimes, the only thing standing in your way is yourself. Lee Hammond shares his journey of overcoming self-doubt, revealing how he struggled to build confidence early on. Through hard work and the power of storytelling, he has gone on to create incredibly successful restaurants.
  •  Free Samples Works – The best way to market your brand? Let people experience what you have to offer. The power of free samples is undeniable—give customers a taste, and they’ll keep coming back for more. Sometimes, giving away a little can go a long way. Lee Hammond understands this well and takes pride in showcasing the quality of his restaurant’s pizza through this approach.
  • Be Better Everyday – Never settling is crucial to success. Lee Hammond and his team exemplify this by continuously striving for improvement. Once you’ve created a great product, don’t stop there—keep finding ways to enhance it for the consumer.

Lee Hammond, owner of Towpath Inn and founder of Magnetic Hospitality, has built a reputation for transforming the way restaurants connect with customers. With a background rooted in digital marketing and a relentless passion for problem-solving, Lee’s journey showcases the power of embracing vulnerability and leveraging innovative strategies to create meaningful customer relationships. “Failing has been a constant in this industry,” Lee admitted. “But every failure is a lesson, and it’s pushed me to think differently about what success looks like.” Lee’s career began in sales, where he spent years working with restaurants, offering solutions to help their operations. Yet, he noticed a common problem: many restaurants relied solely on external factors, like weather, to drive foot traffic. “That’s not a strategy,” Lee recalled. “It rains a lot in Wales. Waiting for sunny weekends isn’t a sustainable way to bring in customers.” This realization sparked a calling: to merge his sales expertise with digital marketing to help restaurants thrive.

The Power of Email Campaigns and Storytelling

Lee’s most impactful strategy has been his email marketing campaign. Starting with a daily commitment, he wrote an email every morning at 6:30 AM. Over two years, this practice helped him grow a list of over 6,500 subscribers. “Writing those emails helped me find my voice,” Lee explained. “It wasn’t just about marketing—it was about building relationships through storytelling.” The emails were more than promotional—they shared Lee’s journey, struggles, and the decisions behind creating his menu and offers. New subscribers receive a 40-day series of stories introducing them to the Towpath Inn’s values, products, and vision. Lee’s philosophy on marketing is simple: let the product speak for itself. Drawing inspiration from street food vendors and brands like Costco, he focused on delivering small, high-quality experiences. “If I believe my pizza is the best, my job is to get people to taste it,” Lee said. “That first bite tells the story better than anything else. ”This principle led to initiatives like the Towpath Inn’s “Street Food Wales Cookbook,” featuring recipes from local vendors, and lead magnets such as free coffee for life programs. These offers brought customers in and built a loyal community around the restaurant.

Vulnerability as a Strength

Throughout his journey, Lee has been open about his struggles. From impostor syndrome to navigating the challenges of operating a seasonal business, he’s embraced vulnerability as a key part of his growth. “For years, I ran my business from a place of fear,” Lee shared. “But I’ve learned to see failure as part of the process.” This mindset shift has been instrumental in fostering innovation and team development. Whether it’s improving dough recipes during the cold winters or investing in technology to streamline operations, Lee approaches every challenge as an opportunity to improve. Now, through Magnetic Hospitality, Lee is helping other restaurant owners implement his strategies. His six-month program focuses on creating irresistible offers, defining a “perfect guest family,” and building systems that align with business goals. “Every restaurant is unique,” Lee noted. “But the principles of storytelling, offering value, and connecting with the right customers apply to everyone. ”Lee’s advice for hospitality leaders is clear: “Tell your story, believe in your product, and don’t be afraid to fail.” By focusing on building relationships and creating authentic experiences, restaurants can thrive in a competitive market.
