Why Your Restaurant Needs Digital Storytelling in 2025

In This Episode

Interview Takeaways

  • Owning Your Brand Identity – Albi Zogaj isn’t trying to please everyone. He’s leaned fully into building a neighborhood-focused brand, embracing a clear marketing voice that’s fun, approachable, and consistent—online and in the dining room.
  • Be the Show, Not the Commercial – From skits and behind-the-scenes kitchen moments to sharing personal stories, Albi understands the importance of storytelling over selling. His short-form content now routinely hits 100K views and fills both his restaurants—with zero ad spend.
  • Scaling Without Sacrificing Your Life – With a podcast, two restaurant locations, and a new product line, Albi is systemizing his operations so he can work on the business—not just in it. His mission? Help other mom-and-pop owners do the same.

Albi Zogaj didn’t wait for permission to start telling his story—he just hit record.

The San Antonio-based restaurateur, who co-founded Albi Italian Kitchen with his mother, is proving that you don’t need a fancy production studio to build a real media brand. With a smartphone, a clear brand identity, and the willingness to show up consistently, Zogaj has turned his family-run restaurant into a growing local brand—and he’s just getting started.

Online Storytelling

“My background’s in marketing,” Zogaj explains. “But I didn’t want to just be textbook smart. I wanted to build something.” So he did. He took Zoom classes from his restaurant’s back office, jumped on the floor to refill drinks during breaks, and eventually helped scale the concept to two locations—all while building a content engine online.

IG Marketing

Zogaj’s approach mirrors much of what host Shawn Walchef has preached for years: “Be The Show, Not The Commercial.” And that’s exactly what Albi’s Instagram and TikTok presence delivers. His videos are funny, personal, and—most importantly—consistent. “You’re going to feel uncomfortable at first,” he says. “But the more videos you make, the better you get.” That persistence paid off: a recent reel hit 100,000 views and drove traffic to both locations without spending a dollar on ads.

But Albi isn’t stopping there. His new business, Restaurant Armor, solves a practical pain point for restaurants—POS device protection. Inspired by repeated hardware breaks in his own restaurant, Zogaj developed a case that now protects his team’s devices, saves money, and is being expanded for other POS systems.

Podcast Marketing

He’s also launched a podcast called Mid-Shift Crisis, aimed at helping mom-and-pop restaurant owners build systems that give them their time back. “I saw too many owners who couldn’t step away from the restaurant—not even for a kid’s baseball game,” he explains. “I didn’t want to build a life like that.” The podcast shares lessons he’s learned from scaling operations while maintaining personal freedom—a topic that deeply resonates with Walchef, who shared his own story of stepping off the manager schedule only after his son was born.

A Shared Belief

Together, Albi and Shawn underscore a powerful idea: owning a business doesn’t mean giving up your life. With storytelling, smart systems, and the courage to evolve, there’s a better way. It’s not just about making payroll or hitting revenue goals—it’s about designing a business that serves your life, not the other way around.

“Every opportunity I’ve had came from stepping back and working on things that let me grow,” Albi says. “That’s when I finally started building something sustainable.”
