In This Episode

Interview Takeaways

  • Data-Driven Guest Insights – In today’s digital era, harnessing integrated data is key to unlocking customer value. By merging insights from Toast, Randy Barnett, VP of Innovation, turns raw data into strategic decisions that boost guest engagement.
  • Using Toast to Enhance Hospitality – Seamless service starts with the right tools. Upgrading to a modern, digital-first POS has transformed operations, making transactions smoother and staff more efficient. Toast plays a key role in creating a consistent guest experience across all locations, allowing teams to focus on what truly matters—delivering exceptional hospitality.
  • 50 Years of Memorable Hospitality – For half a century, Melting Pot has been more than just a restaurant—it’s been a place where guests create unforgettable moments. From anniversaries to first dates, its commitment to interactive dining and exceptional service has made it a beloved brand. Randy Barnett, VP of Innovation, emphasizes that staying relevant for 50 years requires both hospitality and innovation, ensuring every guest experience is as seamless as it is special.

For 50 years, Melting Pot has been more than just a restaurant—it has been a place where people come together, slow down, and connect over an interactive dining experience unlike any other. In an era where many restaurants struggle to stay relevant, Melting Pot continues to thrive not just because of its fondue, but because of its dedication to hospitality—and the technology that enhances it.

Front Burner Brands, the company behind Melting Pot, ensures that every location delivers on its promise of an unforgettable night out. Leaders like Randy Barnett (VP of Innovation), Ana Malmqvist (Chief Marketing Officer), and Kristen Whitlock (F&B Director) work together to merge hospitality with technology, ensuring that Melting Pot’s commitment to service is matched by seamless operations.

Bringing Hospitality and Technology Together

At its core, Melting Pot is about connection—but delivering a consistent, high-quality experience across multiple locations requires more than just great food and service. Before adopting a centralized system, franchisees operated on outdated and inconsistent POS platforms, making it difficult to provide the best possible experience for both guests and staff.

That’s when Melting Pot turned to Toast, a digital-first POS system built for restaurants that prioritize hospitality.

“We needed a platform that could scale, provide transparency, and truly listen to our needs as an enterprise brand,” explains Kristen Whitlock. With Toast, Melting Pot created uniformity across locations, streamlining operations while keeping the guest experience at the center of every decision.

Enhancing the Guest Experience Through Data

Technology isn’t just about efficiency; it’s about understanding guests and making their experiences even more personal. That’s why Melting Pot leverages Recency, Frequency, and Monetary (RFM) analysis, a data-driven segmentation approach that helps them learn more about their most valuable guests.

“We joined Toast and OpenTable data to identify our most loyal guests and create targeted marketing that keeps them coming back,” says Randy Barnett.

One of the things that sets Melting Pot apart is the way departments work together. Unlike traditional restaurant operations where IT, marketing, and operations exist in silos, Barnett and Malmqvist collaborate daily to ensure technology serves the guest experience—not the other way around.

“The relationship between IT and marketing is crucial,” says Malmqvist. “We can have all the data in the world, but if we don’t activate it properly to enhance the guest experience, it’s meaningless.”

This commitment to collaboration is why Melting Pot isn’t just surviving—it’s expanding. With all locations unified under a seamless digital ecosystem, the brand is actively looking for new franchisees in multiple states while continuously improving the dining experience both in-restaurant and at home.

50 Years Strong—And Looking Ahead

Hospitality is about creating moments that last a lifetime. Whether it’s a first date, a family celebration, or just a fun night out with friends, Melting Pot has been bringing people together for five decades. And by blending old-school hospitality with forward-thinking technology, it’s poised to do so for many more.

“The future of hospitality isn’t just about great food,” says Whitlock. “It’s about how we integrate technology and data to create unforgettable experiences. That’s how you stay relevant for 50 years—and beyond.”

For restaurant operators looking to optimize efficiency without sacrificing the heart of hospitality, Melting Pot’s journey proves that embracing technology isn’t just smart—it’s essential. Whether it’s upgrading to a modern POS, leveraging AI-driven customer insights, or fostering cross-department collaboration, investing in digital transformation is the key to long-term success.
