Shawn Walchef spent five years building a media company that made exactly zero dollars. No sponsors. No brand deals. No path besides belief. Today, that same media company has generated more than two million dollars and attracted partners like Toast, Google, Amazon, US Foods and Restaurant365. The difference was not a new strategy or a sudden stroke of luck. It was stubborn consistency and a refusal to walk away before the results showed up.
“We knew it would matter if we kept going,” he said. “We just had to survive long enough for the opportunities to find us.”
Build Before Anyone Cares
In 2017, Walchef started a show called Behind the Smoke on the second floor of a butcher shop. The guests were local entrepreneurs. The budget was whatever they could scrape together from their restaurants. Most episodes were heard by only a handful of people.
But the repetition mattered. Two years. One hundred episodes. A crash course in storytelling, interviewing, technology, and discipline and Walchef continued with what eventually became Cali BBQ Media.
“Nobody watches at first,” he said. “That is the part most people cannot push through.”
The early wins were small. A DM from another city. A message from another country. Proof that someone out there was listening. Enough to keep going.
Find the People Who Believe
The breakthrough came years later through relationships. A connection to Yelp. An introduction to Entrepreneur. A mentor in David Meltzer. Suddenly the long tail of publishing had built a reputation. The idea for Restaurant Influencers finally had a home.
When Toast said yes to sponsoring the show, it opened the door to everything that came next. Not just the podcast, but in person productions, new clients, and a real business model for media.
“Distribution is everything,” Walchef said. “Get the right partner and the whole picture changes.”
Momentum compounds. Better guests. Better opportunities. Better access. One day you realize you are interviewing Shaquille O’Neal and Dana White at the same time. You are sitting across from Emeril Lagasse and John Taffer. And the brands you once admired are now sending contracts instead of emails.
Create Your Own Lane
Walchef tells creators and operators the same thing. The internet rewards people who do not quit. The business creator economy is just beginning. LinkedIn and YouTube are in their early days. And there is room for anyone willing to publish with consistency and curiosity.
“Ask yourself if you can help a brand tell their story better,” he said. “If the answer is yes, then there is opportunity.”
Cali BBQ Media now works with some of the biggest companies in hospitality and tech, but the mission stays the same. Stay curious. Get involved. Ask for help. And keep showing up long after most people stop.
The people you want to reach are reachable. The sponsors you hope to work with are watching. The only requirement is persistence.
Build the platform. Do the reps. Believe long enough for the tide to rise.
For Walchef, it is still rising.
