David Meltzer on Abundance, Bankruptcy and Starting Again

In This Episode

Interview Takeaways

  • Be specific when asking for help. Know what you want and explain where you need guidance so others can understand how to support you.
  • Do not let past setbacks limit your future. David’s experience with bankruptcy shapes his perspective, but it does not determine what he believes he can achieve.
  • Give consistent effort time to compound. Daily action builds momentum, even when results take years to become visible. Shawn’s journey with Cali BBQ Media shows why persistence matters.

Building a business can make it difficult to see beyond the work directly in front of you. For entrepreneurs, restaurant owners, and founders, finding the right mentor can help turn a bigger vision into something worth pursuing every day. In this in-person episode of Digital Hospitality, Shawn Walchef joins David Meltzer on the boardwalk in South Mission Beach to discuss abundance, asking for help, and the persistence required to build something other people do not yet understand.

Thinking Bigger Starts With What You Believe

David shares the story of pursuing his wife’s dream home in Bankers Hill. When she first discovered the property, it was beyond their budget. Three years later, after it returned to the market at a lower price, they were able to secure it in escrow. The experience opens a conversation about how people decide what is possible for their lives.

David connects that mindset to his bankruptcy and the meaning he gives his past. He could have viewed that setback as proof that he would never regain what he once had. Instead, he continues to pursue new possibilities. Seeing someone else’s success inspires him to think bigger, while remaining clear about what he wants for himself and his family.

Shawn shares a similar perspective: he is grateful for the life he has while still feeling there is much more he wants to build. Having a mentor who understands that ambition has helped him keep moving toward it.

Asking for Help Requires a Clear Purpose

Shawn has worked with David since 2019, when his idea of turning a barbecue restaurant into a media company was still met with skepticism. David believed in the vision early. Together, they reflect on the people who questioned how a small restaurant in Spring Valley could become the foundation for a hospitality media business.

For Shawn, mentorship helped him step outside the daily demands of operating a restaurant and recognize the possibilities in technology, storytelling, and relationships. David emphasizes that getting useful guidance starts with knowing what you want and making a specific request. A clear purpose gives someone a better understanding of how they can help.

He also encourages listeners to reconsider their hesitation about reaching out. Asking someone who is capable of helping gives that person an opportunity to contribute. Shawn connects this to his grandfather’s advice: stay curious, get involved, and do not be afraid to ask for help.

Consistency Gives Progress Time to Compound

David explains why occasional bursts of effort often fall short of a daily commitment. He compares studying Spanish for 15 minutes every day with cramming for 15 hours before a test. Consistent practice builds understanding over time, and the same principle applies to business, relationships, and personal goals.

Making progress requires assigning time to your priorities and protecting that commitment. David and Shawn discuss how overwhelming information and competing demands can pull entrepreneurs away from the work that matters most.

Their own relationship shows what sustained effort can produce. Cali BBQ Media’s growth followed years of learning, creating, and building relationships, including periods when the results were difficult to see. David points out that many people would have quit during those early years. Their conversation encourages business owners to clarify their vision, seek support, and keep showing up long enough for their efforts to compound.
