The Power of a Tagline
In this latest Coaching Call with entrepreneur, podcast host, and mentor David Meltzer, host Shawn Walchef explores the power of taglines, the evolution of modern marketing, and the timeless wisdom of Napoleon Hill.
A tagline can encapsulate a life philosophy, a brand’s mission, or a personal mantra. For Shawn Walchef, the tagline “Be the Show, Not the Commercial” defines his work with Cali BBQ Media. His mission is to create engaging, story-driven content that resonates with audiences rather than simply selling to them.
When asked about his taglines, David Meltzer didn’t hesitate to share his top three:
- Make a Lot of Money, Help a Lot of People, Have a Lot of Fun
- Be More Interested than Interesting
- Be Kind to Your Future Self and Do Good Deeds
These taglines aren’t just words—they are guiding principles that Meltzer uses to build a life and career rooted in purpose and impact.
From Commercials to Content Capture
Reflecting on the evolution of advertising, Meltzer highlighted how marketing has shifted from the traditional silos of print, radio, and TV to the boundless opportunities of digital platforms like YouTube, LinkedIn, and TikTok. The key? Capturing content rather than merely creating it.
“I’m not a content creator; I’m a content capturer,” Meltzer says. His strategy involves capturing meaningful moments, modifying them for specific audiences, amplifying their reach, and perpetuating their relevance across multiple platforms.
The concept of essence is central to Meltzer’s approach. Instead of focusing on overused buzzwords like “authenticity,” he emphasizes staying true to your essence—your unique frequency and capabilities. By repeatedly sharing your essence, you attract the right audience while also filtering out those who aren’t aligned with your vision.
Napoleon Hill’s Timeless Wisdom
A highlight of this coaching call was Meltzer’s announcement about his partnership with the Napoleon Hill Institute. As chairman of the institute, Meltzer plans to modernize Hill’s legacy, using today’s technology to amplify and perpetuate Hill’s timeless teachings.
Napoleon Hill, the author of Think and Grow Rich, revolutionized personal development by interviewing the most successful people of his time and distilling their wisdom into actionable principles. Meltzer draws inspiration from Hill’s methods, noting, “The fastest way to get to where you want to be is to find someone who’s already there, ask them for directions, and then help someone else with those directions.”
Using his proven strategy of content capture and amplification, Meltzer aims to bring Hill’s lessons to a new generation, doubling or even tripling the reach of Hill’s work.
Lessons for the Digital Age
This episode serves as a masterclass in personal branding and digital marketing. From the importance of taglines to the power of storytelling, Shawn and David emphasize that success in the digital age requires consistency, authenticity, and a willingness to experiment with new platforms. Whether you’re creating content for YouTube or repurposing old wisdom for TikTok, Meltzer’s advice remains clear: Stay true to your essence, be kind to your future self, and always aim to elevate others.
