The Behind The Smoke Media podcast team presented, How To Turn Your BBQ Business into a Media Company at the National Barbecue and Grilling Association’s conference in Fort Worth, Texas in 2018.
In front of top pitmasters, Shawn Walchef, Derek Marso, and Cory Wagner discussed the creation of their business and digital marketing podcast and how people in the restaurant and hospitality industry can make their own podcast to promote their brands.
What Problem Are We Solving?
The NBBQA needs membership growth in the Digital Age. A majority of the potential new members of the NBBQA are not learning about all the incredible benefits they would get by joining as a new member as well as attending the annual conference.
Passionate BBQ aficionados and industry leaders all over the world are turning to digital and audio content to learn more about the intricacies of building or scaling their business.
They are finding these trusted resources on their smart phones though bbq focused podcasts, informative blogs, engaging YouTube channels, Twitter, Instagram, Faeebook, LinkedIn and through hashtag searching.
Why Do We Care?
Myself and Derek Marso started the Behind The Smoke Podcast to share BBQ War Stories. Now I host the Digital Hospitality podcast to help fellow business owners learn how to digitally evolve.
I understand the struggle.
As Millenial small business owners who opened our BBQ businesses in an underserved and overlooked area of San Diego, we have spent the last ten years learning how to personally use digital marketing to grow our bbq events, build our brand awareness and promote a BBQ movement on the West Coast.
We want the NBBQA and its members to not only learn about the benefits of becoming their own media company but to also teach actionable steps to achieve immediate digital marketing engagement. You can sign up for our Cali BBQ newsletter below.

BBQ Is Shared
Facebook Live Videos, Instagram Stories, IGTV, Hashtag Searches, YouTube Channels, Smart Phones, Smart TVs, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Siri, Yelp, TripAdvisor, WordPress, Anchor, iTunes, Stitcher, Twitter, Periscope, Pinterest, SnapChat Filters, Podcasts, OTT, Canva, MailChimp, LinkedIn Articles, TikTok, and this is only the beginning of the list of free digital marketing tools now available to small businesses.
Once Cali Comfort BBQ and Valley Farm Market stopped relying on possible traditional media coverage and if we were lucky an inbound PR opportunity to solve our marketing efforts, we started to exponentially grow engagement in our mission.
The smart phone and internet has allowed us to niche down into subjects we love deeply as well as inspire us to share our struggles with complete strangers. Ironically, those global strangers soon become friends because of that shared passion.
