Our restaurant was given the opportunity to donate our BBQ catering services to the Dave & Jeff Podcast’s Charity event at Eastlake Country Club in 2018.
We have built our brand by getting involved online and off. We’re active on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Yelp, and we keep notifications on for those we admire in our community.
On our Behind The Smoke podcast, we were able to get Dave Palet to share the story of how he and Jeff Dotseth were able to book the most popular adult star in the world on their podcast.
Dave and Jeff have been San Diego sports radio personalities for the last twenty years.
It was not until they launched their own podcast that Dave and Jeff were able to realize how much more they could connect with their audience by sharing intimate details about depression, suicide, fatherhood, and mixing in thoughtful conversations with internet superstars like Lisa Ann.
From that episode and Jeff’s ability to ask quality questions, the listeners were able to learn so much more about Lisa Ann’s character, complexity and her life’s passions. In addition to being an author, Lisa Ann is a popular personality in the world of Fantasy Football, with her own Sirius XM show and podcast on the topic.

When we knew we were going to be one of the main features of this charity dinner we pulled out no stops and brought BBQ and media services like we were trying to land a Super Bowl hospitality contract.
The best slow-smoked brisket, pulled pork, Wedding Beans, mac-n-cheese and Wicked Peach Cobbler were made from scratch, and our special events team was ready to show off why we built our brand to execute on this exact moment.
We were blown away by the grace, humility, and personality of Lisa Ann when we met her.
She went out of her way to introduce herself to the guests, to our team and tell us personal stories of how depression has affected her life and why she was so happy to be involved with Dave and Jeff’s mission.
Cory Wagner, our Behind the Smoke Digital Media Manager, was even able to capture video of Lisa Ann enjoying our slow-smoked Cali BBQ brisket, as well as some epic photos which were all shared on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and all the other places we have a digital footprint.
As always we stored it all in the cloud so we could use that content in different ways in the future.

On October 14, 2019, the Gary Vee Audio Experience Podcast published an episode named, “The Evolution of Storytelling.”
The entire episode was an in-depth look into the TikTok platform with Gary Vaynerchuk, known to many as Gary Vee, and a top TikTok executive sharing some eye-opening stats regarding the platform.
Consider the following about TikTok:
TikTok has not announced their user numbers publically, but “It’s not a billion, but it’s not half that either,” according to the Gary Vee podcast episode.
In 2019, TikTok became one of the most downloaded apps in the world and shot to the top of the iTunes App Store Top Free Apps ranking.
TikTok has an estimated 500 million active users worldwide, according to Oberlo.
Those are important facts to pay attention to when choosing where to spend your time promoting your business online.
TikTok is huge and will only get bigger.
I was on my drive to my restaurant-turned-media company while consuming this content. At one time Cali Comfort BBQ was just a restaurant. Then we digitally evolved into CaliBBQ.Media.
One of the most important things I have learned over the last two years of publishing a weekly podcast is that in order to make an impact on business in the digital age, it is not enough to just be curious, you also have to get involved.
When Gary Vee got loud on the internet about Snapchat I was late to start publishing. Once I did, I immediately saw results. Most importantly, I learned the nuances of the platform.
That’s what we’re now doing with TikTok.

I was so blown away by the Gary Vee podcast on TikTok that I went through some of my stored videos in my iCloud and picked a few to post immediately.

One was the video of Lisa Ann eating brisket from the event. I was very curious to see how it would perform on TikTok.
I knew it would do well. I didn’t know just how well it would do until soon after I pressed “publish.”
Within minutes, the notifications on my phone blew up with likes, follows and comments. The video reached hundreds of views, then 1,000, then 10,000, then 100,000, 200,000, and more!
The Lisa Ann video is still getting good engagement and continuing to get views as it nears 300,000 and more.
Why does this matter for a small business owner? You can’t buy that type of exposure to promote your restaurant without spending tons of money.

On TikTok you can let your creative juices flow and publish fun content for a huge audience that is actually engaged with what you’re creating. And it costs you nothing other than time.
Soon after the Lisa Ann video caught fire, I asked our Digital Hospitality video team from Blue Vision Entertainment to come by Cali Comfort BBQ for a special TikTok shoot day.
On that Thursday the team got together to cook and create fun, short videos for TikTok and social media. It was a successful day of shooting and now we have tons of content to share online. And it was a lot of fun too.
