ABC10: So this new food concept in Barrio Logan is gaining popularity, offering restaurants a less-expensive way to operate. Barrio Food Hub is a large warehouse space full of what they call ghost kitchens. Our ABC News reporter Laura Acevedo shows us how this new concept is helping these business owners survive.
Laura Acevado (ABC10): Ghost kitchens are serviced through food delivery apps and don’t offer any dining. Business owners tell me this allows them to expand for a much cheaper price tag. It could become the new way to survive in the food industry.
Shawn Walchef (Owner of Cali BBQ): This is a place where it’s a collection of restaurants and food brands, but it’s for delivery and takeout. So there’s not that onsite dining component.
Laura Acevado (ABC10): Ghost kitchens are now here in San Diego. Bario Food Hub opened just two weeks ago in Barrio Logan with 23 food concepts providing kitchen space for restaurants to sell their food for delivery and pickup only.
Shawn Walchef (Owner of Cali BBQ): That allows a brand like ours to expand to our second location.
Laura Acevado (ABC10): Shawn Walchef is the owner of Cali Comfort BBQ in Spring Valley. And now a second location, Cali BBQ in the Barrio Food Hub.
Shawn Walchef (Owner of Cali BBQ): Where you get into this ghost kitchen location less than 100,000 dollars. If we wanted to open up a full service restaurant sports bar, we would be looking at anywhere from one to two million dollars.
Laura Acevado (ABC10): The kitchens are 200 to 400 square feet. For some, it’s helping them get a start in the food industry.
William Stewart (Willie Wingz): We ended up cooking out of my grandma’s house and then we ended up here with a big blessing.
Laura Acevado (ABC10): William Stewart co-owns Willie Wingz with his grandmother and uncle, expanding their clientele and now able to sell more than ever before.
William Stewart (Willie Wingz): The impact has been real big. We’ve been able to market our food out to the whole city basically now.
Laura Acevado (ABC10): Offering a new way to stay in business during a pandemic when so many are struggling to survive.
William Stewart (Willie Wingz): We’re attracting a lot of more customers than we did before when I was at my grandmother’s house.
Laura Acevado (ABC10): In Barrio Logan. Laura Acevado, with ABC 10 News.
ABC10: What an idea.
