In this latest Coaching Call with entrepreneur, podcast host, and mentor David Meltzer, host Shawn Walchef discusses lessons on personal growth, public speaking and both inspiration and practical advice.
David Meltzer has always had confidence speaking in public, something he attributes to being ‘born with it,’ yet he emphasizes the importance of practice, stating, ‘The only way to get better is to continuously put yourself out there and learn from every experience. With this super power, David introduces his ‘Stage Theory’ concept—the idea that the world is your stage, and that impactful content lies in capturing authentic moments. Reflecting on a memorable experience with his daughter at the Sydney Opera House, David explains how confidence and connection come from preparation. ‘Before I step on a stage,’ he says, ‘I want to make sure that I can articulate the lessons and the stories that I want to convey with confidence and comfortability.’
This mindset goes beyond traditional content creation; instead, David emphasizes content capture, explaining, ‘I think I’m one of the best content captures in the world. I capture more of my essence, my skills, my knowledge, and my desire better than most people.’ By focusing on this authentic approach, David demonstrates how to foster deeper, lasting connections with audiences.”
Technology has simplified content capture, making it accessible for everyone. “I have an A-gimbal that is incredible,” David shares. “You put it on a tripod, and it will follow me around on a stage.” His shift from large media teams to tech-driven setups illustrates how technology enables authentic storytelling on any budget.
This blend of storytelling and technology applies equally in hospitality. “People buy on emotion, especially food and drink; they buy on emotion for logical reasons,” David explains, urging professionals to use technology to deepen, not replace, human connection.
Adapting to new topics is another essential skill. David recalls his keynote at Ad Week, where instead of discussing AI, he chose a bold angle with “Shakespearean Marketing” as his theme. By framing his presentation within a compelling narrative, David illustrates how to make even unexpected topics resonate. “You could give me any topic right now, and I could put it into a framework of context,” he explains.
Continuous improvement is critical, and David applies lessons he learned from Jay Leno to refine his approach. “Jay would test out jokes at over 150 corporate events before delivering them on his monologue,” David notes, emphasizing the power of repetition and real-time feedback in crafting memorable content. “The simple things to do are simple not to do,” he adds, pointing out that true expertise comes from mastering the basics. As Shawn advances his media journey, he credits David’s mentorship for helping him grow Digital Hospitality from zero to seven figures. Through lessons in practice, feedback, and the art of storytelling, Shawn and David show how content capture and public speaking can drive both personal and professional growth.
