Shawn Walchef has spent years building two things at the same time: a restaurant business and a media brand strong enough to attract the people most podcasters only dream about. Today, his guest list includes Shaquille O’Neal, Dana White, John Taffer and Chef Robert Irvine. None of it came from luck. It came from consistency, community, and the willingness to publish long before anyone was watching.
“You have to build the platform first,” he said. “Once you do that, the people you want eventually find you.”
Start Local and Do the Reps
Before the celebrities, Walchef sat down with whoever was accessible. Local anchors, local founders, local operators. The point was not prestige. It was practice. With more than 3 million podcasts on Apple and most fading before episode ten, the first milestone is simple: show up long enough to matter.
“Start with the micro celebrities around you,” he said. “Prove you can put in the work.”
Quality did not come first. Quantity did. And doubling output was the game changer. More episodes meant faster improvement and a body of work people could trust.
Grow Your Reach With Partnerships
The next breakthrough came when Cali BBQ Media partnered with Entrepreneur to launch Restaurant Influencers. Bigger platform, bigger guests. Sponsors like Toast followed. So did a larger audience.
“Distribution matters,” Walchef said. “You need a bigger megaphone if you want bigger voices.”
Partnerships raised the bar. Better production. Better storytelling. Better research. And with that lift came new access.
After enough reps, something shifts. Publicists start emailing. PR teams pitch clients. People who once ignored you now want on your calendar.
Walchef calls it the reverse funnel. It only happens once your work becomes undeniable.
“It is the magic,” he said. “But you have to earn it.”
Now the challenge is choosing the right guests and producing at a pace that matches demand. Walchef is pushing toward two episodes a week because momentum rewards consistency.
Thinking Big
He is vocal about his next targets: Ryan Reynolds and Martha Stewart. Speaking it out loud keeps him accountable.
“I have no problem failing,” he said. “I have no problem asking for help.”
The formula is simple. Build your show. Publish often. Partner wisely. Become so good they cannot ignore you.
A rising tide lifts all ships. And for Walchef, that tide is still climbing.
